The problem
Sales managers have at times been promoted from pure sales positions due to their track records, but they have little management experience.
Some approaches
Short term: If you have no management training system, try to leverage the knowledge of experienced managers by setting up a formal mentoring program, where they coach and advise new managers. Send new managers to programs outside the organization to give them a quick start.
Long term: Form a committee on management training including both experienced and relatively new managers. Determine top needs and design a training plan for managers over a five-year period to include education, industry programs, developmental opportunities, and some tools specific to your company. Build in evaluation and assessment tools as part of the plan.
